Education Naturally
Education Naturally Introduction
The Mississauga Garden Council is responsible for the delivery of educational programs in Riverwood. The park consists of 150 acres of “urban wilderness”. On it can be found heritage buildings dating from the 1850’s, stands of uncut forest, wetlands, deer, owls and other wildlife. The Credit River runs through Riverwood. Salmon and rainbow trout spawn here every year. Opportunities to study wildlife, geology, ecology, and natural history abound at Riverwood. Active, engaging experiences await your class at Riverwood.
Students take part in ongoing research and stewardship programs that will add to their understanding of the natural world and today’s science curriculum.
They will explore an urban wilderness of forests, meadows and marshes nestled along the banks of the Credit River. Our living laboratory is home to abundant wildlife. Programs provide students opportunities to interact with and study a variety of birds, deer, other wildlife, plants and geology.
Please note that while many of our activities take place outdoors we do offer indoor programs in the 150-year-old MacEwan Field Station. It is fully heated and air-conditioned to make your experience here enjoyable even in inclement weather.
Our education programs reflect the revised Ministry Science Guidelines (2007). They support the goals and expectations of the science and geography curriculums. Your visit is supported by pre- and post-visit activities that are designed to integrate with your class’s units.
On site and classroom activities are supported by a E-book generously illustrated with images and text to help students better understand the concepts covered. In keeping with the new guidelines all of our programs include a stewardship activity that relates to the student’s environment.
