March Break Camp

Riverwood Nature March Break Camp for Kids

A whole lot of shaking going on (earthquakes, volcanoes and maps)
The furrier the better (how about those mammals?)

Things that go bump in the night and day (birds, bats, owls, whooo else!)

Oldies but goodies (fossils, dinosaurs and meteors, oh my!)

That was last year's lineup but, as we enter our fourth year, you can look for new programs and new surprises.  Riverwood Nature March Break Camp runs the same week chosen by the public school board for their March Break.  Designed for students in grades 2 through 5, the all-day all-week program has both indoor and outdoor elements.

A sampling of activities presented in the past included:

  • hiking and learning to use the GPS and compass
  • learning to use a microscope and binocular to have an in-depth look at the inhabitants in the classroom aquariums including local fish, frog, crayfish and turtles.
  • creating craft designs of bats, clay models of wildlife and plasticene models of birds and sand art
  • enjoying science activities that demonstrate the force of volcanoes, movement of earthquake waves and their subsequent destructive forces
  • learning how meteors make an impact
  • visiting Riverwood's outdoor residents and hand-feed Black-Capped Chickadees and Red Squirrels
  • exploring and identifying wildlife tracks of White-tailed Deer, Long-tailed Weasels and other winter residents
  • enjoy picnics in full winter gear

Education Naturally

MGC teaches Science, Nature and Environmental Science programs at Riverwood.  “This is the ideal site to introduce children to the wonder of Ontario’s natural environment. It makes science really come to life for students and creates indelible learning experiences” says Dave Taylor, Education Program Director/Consultant. pond chappell

Students in grades 1 to 8 safely explore forest, ravine and valley, creek, meadow, wetland and marsh under the supervision of trained teachers and volunteers. Students track deer, monitor wildlife, collect data on life in the forests, observe migrating salmon and learn about the environment (past, present and future).

Programs meet the Ministry of Education curriculum guidelines. Outdoor courses are integrated with pre-and post-visit classroom activities that include pre-visit planning with our teacher and a program CD. Student hands-on research and observations are collected and shared with the community through a phenology database that contains sightings of wildlife and other natural events.

All-season programs are affordable and accessible to the physically challenged.

Special Offer!

Students will be welcomed to the MacEwan Field Station.  They will enjoy both an indoor program of making food ornaments to be hung on trees.  They will then go on an outdoor adventure to meet the birds and perhaps hand feed them.
A wonderful opportunity for teachers and students to explore the wonder of Ontario’s natural environment and see first-hand the classroom and hidden urban wilderness where students will benefit from Science, Nature and Environmental Science programs at Riverwood.
